Lesson 20: I wanted to swim.

This lesson builds on what we've learned about expressing wants. Recall from Lesson 9 that when you say you want to do something you take the ます off of the ます form of the verb and replace it with たい.

Example:

わたしはこうえんにいきます。 - I go to the park.
わたしはこうえんにいきたい。 - I want to go to the park.

Next please recall Lesson 16 and Lesson 17. Here we learned about making the negative and past forms of い adjectives. To make a negative い adjective you take off the last い and replace it with くない. To make a past form い adjective you take of the last い and replace it with かった.

The negative and past forms of the たい verbs are made the same way that the い adjective forms are. To make the negative form, drop the final い and add くない. To make the past form drop the final い and add かった. To make the negative past form, drop the final い and add くなかった.

Examples:

りんごをたべたい。
I want to eat apples.
りんごをたべたくない。
I don't want to eat apples.
りんごをたべたかった。 I wanted to eat apples.
りんごをたべたくなかった。 I didn't want to eat apples.

プールでおよぎます。 I swim at the pool.
プールでおよぎたい。 I want to swim at the pool.
プールでおよぎたくない。 I don't want to swim at the pool.
プールでおよぎたかった。 I wanted to swim at the pool.
プールでおよぎたくなかった。 I didn't want to swim at the pool.

To make these sentences more polite, you can add です to the end of them.

Examples:

りんごをたべたいです。
I want to eat apples.
